Design Tech Track offers hands-on study of scenic, costume, lighting and audio design to students interested in the backstage world of theatre. Study the art of technical theatre with PGT’s incredible teaching artists in The Play Group Theatre’s fully equipped performing arts complex.
Design Tech Track (D/T Summer) is a mutli-disciplinary, hands-on experience introducing students to the basics of set design and construction, costuming, prop making and technical theatre, including sound and lighting.
The D/T kids benefit from an immersive experience within their own track, while still being an active part of the larger MainStage program, and the camp as a whole.
Three distinct components make up the D/T Summer experience.
The Shop: Students will work with PGT’s professional designers and technicians, moving through the design phase and into the execution of all aspects of production work for PGT’s MainStage season, including scenic, costumes, props, lights and sound.
Classes: Each day, D/T students take at least one class with the MainStage cast, sampling acting, Shakespeare, improv classes and more. This provides a deeper understanding of the work that is happening on stage - the very work they are designing for. Class time also allows strong bonds of friendship to be formed between designers and actors.
Independent Project: D/T Summer students have the opportunity to work on an independent design project. Creating their very own designs for an unrealized production, young designers begin to find their own style and vision. Students learn how to create set models, costume mock-ups and more.
The D/T Summer experience also includes running the MainStage show. Possible jobs include light board, sound board, wardrobe and/or running crew. This program is recommended for those who want to focus entirely on design and technical theatre as well as actors interested in exploring design and technical aspects of the creative process for a summer.
